This journey with my experiment of creating my own K-beauty skincare brand is finally coming to a close! I’ve not only learned SO MUCH about all the details of what it takes to create your own product, from selecting key ingredients and how it’s helpful for the skin, creating a logo (shout out to Mayk for the help!), to crafting up a brand name. I must have spent hours alone selecting a name for not only my own brand, but also for my first product!
Before I get ahead of myself, lets recap – you can see my first blog post (here) where I talked about getting connected with Mayk, a company dedicated to helping you create your very own skincare products, or even elevate a brand you’ve already started!
You can start by browsing their catalogue, where you can find a variety of formulas you can choose to produce, and order your samples directly through the catalogue too! Their services also include formula customization, packaging and logo design, and 3D rendering to visualize your final products! They can also help with logistics and getting the products to your doorstep, quality assurance and product certifications, and SAMPLES!!
After filling out the inquiry form on Mayk’s website (from my phone because it was that easy!) with what I wanted my initial product to visually look, smell, and FEEL like.. you read right, they even ask what consistency you prefer.. Fast forward to getting those samples: I couldn’t believe how quick I received them all the way from Korea!
They took each detail and provided me with four different samples with different variations tailored to my request.
{Test, Test, Test}
I spent the next couple of weeks trying each sample variation, under makeup and on makeup-less days so I could feel how it wore throughout the day. I mentally asked myself:
- Did it make my makeup wear differently?
- Make my skin feel… weird?
- Could I tolerate the smell or did I even want a fragrance?
- Did I like the way it felt when I applied it?
- Is this something I could potentially put my name on?
I finally selected the one that was PERFECT.. it passed the consistency, viscosity, and smell tests!
{Transparent Whitening Serum with 12% Niacinamide}
After living in Korea for so long, I realized the benefits to having a whitening element in skincare.. the Niacinamide is key for the skin to not only calming redness, but reduce pore size and wrinkles.. we love a youthful look..
I. Was. Excited. I finally had my hands on a real life product and the next step was working with Mayk for a consultation to talk about the 3D image mock up.. time to put the finishing touches! I also incorporated what you all voted for on my Instagram stories (appreciate the help – it was amazing confirmation!). Since they had my design specs like bottle size, the type of lid/top I wanted, logo, and name, they were able to create the most realistic bottle visual I could dream of!
Presenting the 3D version of my product! I call it….. Filter and this is the Pore Resolution!!
{Pinch Me!}
Wait, did you think it would be that easy? Check my Instagram or TikTok to get the official 3D scoop!
But let’s talk the name.. I picked Filter because we are always looking to use filters to make ourselves look and feel better about our outside – why not make this real life WITHOUT the need for a filter?? Naturally, our insides will radiate too! I selected Pore Resolution, because this will be your solution to help minimize those pores and keep wrinkles away – Do we love it?!?!
I’m still going back and forth on the bottle, but working with Mayk has been easy.. I think we are about 95% there.
I need to put a disclaimer, even if you go through this entire process and decide you don’t want to move forward, you’re under no obligation to put an order in for your product. So many things have crossed my mind.. how will I market my product? Maybe I should do more sampling? They’ll send additional samples, if you later decide you want more, there’s no issues with that! And a very real scenario, how/where am I going to store all the boxes?
{You do You}
It’s really on your schedule and personal timelines how you want to move forward and I love that. It’s your product, you want to make it absolutely perfect (as you should), so TAKE YOUR TIME, but by all means, take the plunge if it feels right!
I wanted to document this experience because while creating a product is exciting, especially from a completely different country, there’s not a lot of information out there about how to do that (most influencers definitely aren’t sharing their secrets – but I wanted to be an open book).
I hope this information was helpful if you’ve ever wondered how to create your own skincare product/brand and a K-beauty one for that matter! Please let me know if you have questions, I’d love to help!! Until then, I have some major decisions to make in the future!
